Discount Auto Rentals
Discount auto rentals can end up costing more than
regularly priced rentals once all the hidden fees
are added up, so be careful not to be drawn in by
a big name on the billboard without looking at all
the small print on the contract. Most discount auto
rentals start with a small base price and start adding
on fees once you've already waited in line: by then,
you've already committed to them. Don't be surprised
if the total is more than double what you thought
it would be when you first walked in.
How to Avoid Extra Fees with Discount Auto Rentals
The simplest solution is the hardest: read all the
policies of the rental company. You'd be surprised
at what they can charge you for. If you rent a car
at a weekly rate, for instance, and return it too
early, they may revert to the much higher daily rate
and charge you that instead. You think you're getting
a discount by being punctual, but instead, you're
paying extra for having the car for a shorter period!
Double-check the policy on gasoline when you rent
your car, too. Sometimes they require you to fill
it up before returning it. Keep in mind: if you're
driving around the drop-off location looking for a
gas station and return the vehicle past the return
time, you might get charged an extra day's rental.
Some places will gladly refill the tank for you, but
charge two or three times the going rate for the gas.
